Pharmacology - 1 Flashcards
1
Q
Define drug
A
A chemical entity used to prevent or alter the course of a disease.
2
Q
What are the two main types of drugs?
A
Small molecules
Biologics
3
Q
Small molecules are usually very small, often just a few atoms. Biologics are huge in comparison
A
Comparing the size of small molecule and biologics
4
Q
What are the targets of drugs?
A
- Targets that are involved a particular disease process
- Then exhibit the required response
5
Q
Define drug target and give examples
A
A macromolecular component of a cell with which a drug interacts to produce a response. They are usually proteins
6
Q
How do drugs work?
A
- Most drugs act on receptors, these can be inside the cell or more commonly on the cell surface
- Must form a tight bond with the receptor
7
Q
Drugs can either stimulate or inhibit a receptor. What names are given to this?
A
Agonist
Antagonst
8
Q
Common drug targets
A
- Enzyme linked receptors
- ion channel linked
- G protein linked
- Nucelar receptor (usually much longer lasting)
9
Q
Describe Bisoprolol
A
