Q

Importation Biocontrol is based on:

A

Enemies release hypothesis by Charles Darwin

“exotic species become invasive because they are freed of their natural predators”

Q

Example of Importation Biocontrol

A

Cottony-Cushion Scale (ccs) invaded California citrus trees in the 1880’s. Beneficials used were Vedalia Beetles and Parasitic flies both imported from Australia. They were able to save the industry millions, with it only costing $5,000 to fix the issue.

16
Q

Augmentation Biocontrol

A

Involves increasing beneficial population by rearing and releasing.

17
Q

When is Augmentation Biocontrol used?

A

When natural enemies are missing, slow to arrive, or too scarce.

18
Q

Two types of releases in Augmentation Biocontrol

A

Inoculative: released early to prevent
Inundative: large # released for quick pest suppression

19
Q

Who does Augmentation Control

A

Governments and commercial operations

20
Q

Example of Augmentation Biocontrol

A

Greenhouse Veggie growers would use this biocontrol method. Challenges being cost and integration especially for small scaled farms.

21
Q

Two Augmentation Myths

A

Praying Mantis: worthless PM and ambush predator

Releasing Lady beetles: pass diseases and wrong ecotype usually
