Perth Characteristics Flashcards
Age and Gender Spatial Dist. in Perth
Gender
Increased ratio of females to males in urban areas
In urban areas 100 females : 99.8 males
Family-Oriented Suburbs: Areas like Canning Vale and Joondalup tend to have more balanced or slightly male-skewed populations due to young families.
Affluent Suburbs: Suburbs such as Dalkeith and Cottesloe may have a higher proportion of females, often due to older populations and higher life expectancy among women.
Male dominated work sectors: mining and construction
Female dominated: healthcare and education
Age
- Older families attracted to ERZ, Younger people “DINK” (Double Income, No Kids) attracted to NGZs In ERZ, there is greater access to health facilities which is important for 65 year olds and above. In general people who grow up in ERZ are remain to stay there, as it is comfortable and familiar
In NGZs, more attractive to younger people due to lack of parking and the presence of stairs and noise from entertainment (pubs). These areas like “Highgate” are dominated by younger couples and single persons
CBD night life invites a younger demographic, as well as employment opportunities in several sectors (finance, law, mining)
Cultural Distribution (ethnic clustering) in Perth - 2 reasons
Ethnic clustering is a term used to describe when groups of people from a similar background live in, or around the same location
Reason 1: Finding Stability
New immigrants to Australia, normally have a desire to to settle and find stability in a new place. People are naturally drawn to locations, areas or people that have a familiarity. A common purpose, interests or language helps people to develop relationships and such, a new sense of home
Reason 2: Ethnic Clustering past down generations
This is established through common thread that draw people together including ancestry and religion. An example of this in Perth is: The Greek Community
Greek people migrated to Perth mainly during the 1930s to 1950s. Initially, they mostly located in Northbridge and Perth. This is where the first two Greek orthodox churches were constructed and still used by the community today. This has drawn later attraction and migration to Perth with Greek communities being found in several other suburbs (Balcatta/Stirling)
Site and Situation influencing Perth’s spatial distribution of demographic characteristics
Site factors of Perth has restricted urban growth - due to areas being heritage listed/protected by government. (so land cannot be built on)
For example, Darling Escarpment and State Forest. The Darling Escarpment steeply rises to an elevation of up to 300m above seal level with laterite soils and granite outcrops which contribute to less favourable conditions for urban growth. - waffle how lead to people being more concentrated around CBD and NGZs etc.
Also the coast can’t extend westwards because of Indian Ocean
Situation: Perth is situated along major highways and freeways: Great Northern, Great Eastern, Albany and South Western. This has influenced working class aged people 24-55 to live close to public transport stops and stations so commute to work is inexpensive and not impacted by congestion. This is also due to lack of parking and how costly it is
Liveability Factor of Metro Perth: Affordable Decent Housing
Affordable decent housing in metropolitan Perth performs in the top third of Australian
Perth metropolitan areas with a score of 5.7 compared to other Australian Metropolitan areas with a
score of 5.1.
Except for the inner areas, all regions within Perth fall within the top third, while
the inner area ranks in the middle third for affordable decent housing.
Liveability Factor of Regional WA: Affordable decent housing
Affordable decent housing in regional Western Australia performs in the bottom two thirds of Australian Metropolitan areas for affordable decent housing when compared to Australia.
Bunbury and the Wheatbelt perform in the middle third, while outback areas in the
north and south perform in the bottom third; however, a small sample size renders this data unreliable.
Meaning basically harder to find affordable and decent housing in rural WA then in metro Perth
