Q

Once large numbers of people start going to a place, large companies want a share of the money they bring. So they build hotels and hire cheap local workers.

A

The hotel doesn’t pay to fix everything damaged by the tourists (e.g. destroyed beaches), they just collect the money and move it overseas (meaning the local area suffers while the large company profits).

Q

People travelling to islands or fragile places like ancient cities can physically destroy it.

A

Place gets destroyed – tourists move on to next bucket list activity while the locals (and the world) has lost another important place.
Government may ban visitors to that place.

Q

Venice impacts of travel-

A

When there are 22 million tourists every year but only 60 thousand locals, the businesses and the government focus so much on making the tourists happy (because that’s where the money comes from). This makes life miserable for the locals (imagine if every shop in your town was a gift shop or if your school had a thousand visitors every day).
Tourists often don’t understand that they have such a big effect. All the garbage on the footpaths and bridges has to be collected by hand (people walking around). And when people throw their rubbish in the canals, it has to get dragged out of the water by hand by people in boats. All this just because people couldn’t be bothered finding a bin.
The wear and tear caused by so many people even walking (or dragging their suitcases along a thousand year old path) means that the government has to spend money fixing them up (or leave them to get ruined forever).
The house prices and cost of living are too high for most people.
Also, the city is being slowly drowned by the Adriatic Sea - It would take about 80 years for the city to be completely unliveable.

Q

venice- what have they done

A

Locals have worked out that charging tourists more than they charge locals for everyday items allows them to afford to keep paying the rents in their own city. However, it’s illegal.
The ‘Detourism’ campaign has tried to encourage people to visit at less popular times of the year and to give advice for tourists on how to do the right things when visiting.
Tourists are encouraged to keep reusing their water bottles, so there are lots of places to refill them (otherwise they end up in the canals)
