Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
PNS
nerves connecting the CNS to the rest of the body, allows for communication between spinal cord & brain and the rest of your body
Somatic NS
sensory nerves that bring info from the sense receptors to the CNS, motor nerves that bring info from the CNS to the skeletal muscles, basically controls muscles, ability to move and sense environment
Autonomic NS
operates automatically, transmits info between CNS and: glands, heart, arteries, digestive system
Which subdivision of the PNS do the sympathetic and parasympathetic NS belong to?
Autonomic NS
Sympathetic NS
When stress is felt, it automatically mobilizes bodily resources: prepares you for action, fight or flight, increase in heartbeat + blood pressure, shuts down digestive system
Parasympathetic NS
When emergency is over, it brings down the body’s heightened response: back to normal, breathing slows, etc…
