Periodic table trends and Definitions Flashcards
Define ‘element’
A substance made of only one type of atom. These atoms have the same atomic number, (number of protons)
What is Bohr’s Model of an atom
Bohr’s Model describes electrons orbiting the nucleus at specific energy levels called shells.
What evidence is there for Bohr’s model?
The emittion spectra, This is the exact frequencies of light emitted from an atoms electrons changing from an excited sate to a ground state, this was accurately predicted by Bohr’s model.
Define Compound
A substance made of two or more different types of atoms
Define Molecule
A group of atoms bonded together
Define Atom
The smallest particle of an element.
What is Schrödinger’s model?
Similar to Bohr’s model but instead of defined orbits it has fields of probability.
What are the properties of metals?
Lustrous, Malleable, Ductile and good conductors or electricity
What are the properties of Non metals?
Dull, Brittle and non conductors
What is Atomic radius and what is its trend in the Table?
The distance from the nucleus to the outermost electron. This gets larger down the table and smaller across
What is ionization Energy and what is its trend in the Table?
The energy required to remove an electron from an atom (in a gas form). It gets smaller down the table and larger across.
What is reactivity and what is its trend in the tabel?
Reactivity refers to how willing an atom is bond with another substance. (Metals) it increases down the table and decreases across. (Non Metals) it decreases down the table and increases across.
What is Metallic character and what is its trend in the table?
Metals ability or willingness to give up electrons. Increases down the table and decreases across.
What is Non-Metallic character and what is its trend in the table?
Non-metals strength to gain electrons. It decreases down the table and increases across.
What is Electro Negativity and what is its trend in the table
A measure of an atoms attraction for another atoms electrons. It decreases down the table and increases across.
