Q

SOLID WHITE LINES (meaning)

A

SOLID WHITE LINES are intended to discourage you from changing lanes. While in some states crossing a solid white line is illegal, it is legal to do so in California, unless the solid white line designates a turn. Keep in mind that the solid white line is there for a reason and is meant to discourage you from crossing. If you decide to cross it anyway, you may be guilty of an unsafe lane change depending on the circumstances. Cross a solid white line only if it is safe to do so.

DOUBLE YELLOW LINES (meaning)

A

Two sets of solid double yellow lines that are two or more feet apart sometimes appear as road markings. These lines stand for a solid wall. Don’t drive on or over these lines. You may not make a left turn or U-turn in this space. Cross only at plainly marked openings. Double solid yellow lines indicate that no vehicle may pass. It’s okay to cross a double yellow line to turn left. You may cross it when turning into or out of a private road or driveway. You are also allowed to make a U-turn across a double yellow line when it is safe and legal. You cannot cross a double yellow line to pass another vehicle.

Edge line markings should be used as visual references to guide road users during adverse weather and visibility conditions. especially when driving in fog.

Q

Obstructions

A

Special pavement markings are used to guide traffic away from fixed obstructions on a road (e.g., bridge supports, medians, or raised islands). If traffic is required to pass only to the right of the obstruction, yellow diagonal approach markings may be placed in the area.
White markings are used when traffic can pass either to the right or left of the obstruction.
