Pathophysiology Flashcards
What is simple diffusion?
Random movement from region of high concentration to low concentration
What is facilitated diffusion?
Movement from region of high concentration to low concentration with aid of carrier channel or protein
What is osmosis?
Movement of water from high concentration of water (low solute concentration) to low concentration of water (high solute concentration)
What is active transport?
Movement of low concentration to high concentration with the aid of carrier channel or protein (usually ATP)
Define endocytosis
Materials are engulfed by the plasma membrane and drawn into the cell
Define exocytosis
Material bound vesicle from inside the cell fuses with the plasma membrane and spills contents outside the cell.
Water makes up what percent total body weight?
60%
Where is most of the water in the body stored?
Intracellular
What percent of water is stored in the intracellular and extracellular compartments?
70% ICF 30% ECF
What two compartments does extracellular fluid go into?
Intravascular and interstitial fluid
Water is a universal solvent, what does that mean?
Most substances dissolve in water
What are erythrocytes?
Red blood cells
What are leukocytes?
White blood cells
What are thrombocytes?
Platelets
