after age 1 unlikely will close spontaneously so trans-catheter or surgical closure done

closed earlier if symptomatic or evidence heart failure

indomethacin or ibuprofen

  • given to the neonate
  • inhibits prostaglandin synthesis
  • closes the connection in the majority of case
