Q

tasked with new public service announcement for high school students to discourage texting and driving, which can be damaging for health.
a) why is a public service announcement about texting and driving relevant for high school student?

A
  • relevant bc this is the age teens begin to drive
  • as they are emerging into adolescence they are beginning to experience physical, neurological, and cognitive changes
  • they are discovering and developing a sense of identity as they explore new peer groups, relationships, and begin to abstract think
  • with new peer groups comes deviant peer cognition and since the prefrontal cortex is still developing, and their is a gap between stim o the dopamine sys it often leads teens this age more prone to risky behaviours

b) create a 1-paragraph message to discourage high school students from texting and driving

A

-Texting and driving can be lead to fatal and irreversible consequences
- In doing so, in one quick a catastrophic moment can occur in the second you look down at your phone
- For selfish and unnecessary reasons, you could not only harm yourself, but an innocent trying to get threw their own day - could you live with that guilt?
- If someone you loved were in this circumstance would you want them to prioritize their response or their safety?
- It is important to recognize the risk that you put yourself in the moment you text and drive for both yourself and others sake

Q

tasked with new public service announcement for high school students to discourage texting and driving, which can be damaging for health.

c) justify why your paragraph is likely to be successful based on features you chose to include (or not) in your message

A
  • thoughtful message processing; deserved careful cognition and a deeper meaning to portray the message
  • connecting the message to things teens will care about bc someone is willing to listen more when they care about the issue (central processing)
  • correlated with fear to make it memorable, while also providing a solution to alleviate the fear - this will make them more likely to not text and drive
  • subliminal advertising - uses stimuli they can connect with to dive into their conscious perception
  • inoculation - way of creating a counterargument to the position when put in it

Q

d) design a study to test whether your messaging is successful. describe all variables, and research design, and explain how results are relevant to your hypothesis.

A
  • longitudinal study to track groups of teens that read the paragraph notice
  • participants would be groups of teens in the same age group randomly selected that can drive, for external validity
  • have them complete daily entry every time they considered texting and driving, and whether they followed through or not
  • it would be a large participant pool to get the more accurate and reliable results to avoid confounds
  • variables would be whether they are consistent with entries, pre-existing traits, attitudes, etc
  • my hypothesis would be central processing, inoculation, the use of fear, and thoughtful message processing convey the message well
  • if results proved teens who read the message avoided texting and driving this would prove my hypothesis to be correct

Q

you are a psychological scientist serving as a guest speaker for a podcast. your case:
- marla and danton are parents to 4 yr old alexis and 1 yr old thomas
- bc of covid daycare has been challenging (closed, etc), and they have no one to help w childcare, they both need to work to make ends meet
- they missed a couple of bill payments and are exhausted from working
- children have been misbehaving (alexis has been lying, thomas crying).
- they need to b stricter so they behave better
- danton argues marla is too soft w the kids, also says marla support the kids in activity they want to pursue while danton believes there are activities kids must engage in
- since thomas’s birth danton says marla is over worrying about the kids
- danton wonders whether he should be concerned about the challenges his family is facing and what to do
choose 4 issues within the case

A

1) financial issues: danton mentions they are overworked and have bills they need to pay this is contributing to the family stress model. this model describes how financial diff during child development correlate w depressive moods, marriage prob, and poor parenting shown by danton.
2. lack of social support / 3. lack of attention: due to this parents are experiencing poor well-being, large networks increase happiness while isolation induces depression this has a big impact. this causes the parents to be poor attachment figures for the children. The children have developed an anxious resistant pattern -> why they have an anxious-resistant pattern where they become extremely distressed when parents leave. this is concerning bc that type of attachment behaviour will exhibit the same tendencies as an adult.
4. diff parenting styles: danton has an authoritarian parenting style, while marla has an authoritative style. authoritative parents how interest in kids activities and are more reasonable and nurturing. authoritarian are low responsiveness high control. inconsistent parenting like this is a risk factor for the child development of antisocial personality disorder. this parenting style also doesn’t correlate with goodness of fit as danton is not accommodating the child’s temperamental attributes which negatively contributes to development and growth.
