Part X Flashcards
What part of the body is the sneeze reflex assoicated with?
nasal passages
Irritation of nasal passages sends signal to what cranial nerve and then to what structure?
CN X to medulla
What happens when you sneeze?
similar to cough, in addition uvula is depressed so large amounts of air pass rapidly through the nose to clear nasal passagways
What is the speed of a sneeze or cough?
75-100mph
What does the mucociliary elevator do?
clears smaller airways
Where is the mucous for the mucociliary elevator produced?
goblet cells in epithelium and small submucosal glands
What is the name of the epithelium that lines the respiratory tract all the way down to the terminal bronchioles?
ciliated epithelium
Describe the mucous for the mucociliary elevator?
swallowed or coughed out and used to destroy organisms in an acid environment if swallowed
What are the two immune responses of the lung?
alveolar macrophages, complement system
What can the alveolar macrophages do?
can phagocytize intraluminal particles
Where are the alveolar macrophages most commonly located?
distal air spaces
What is the complement system for the lung?
small proteins found in the blood synthesized in the liver
What does the complement system do?
complements the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear pathogens from an organism, it is part of the innate immune system along wiht macrophages
What are the antibodies associated with the mucosa in the lung?
IgG, IgA, IgE
What does IgG do in the lung?
lower respiratory tract
