part 4 Flashcards
what is the importance of oxygen in cellular respiration
facilitates the movement of electrons down the electron transport chain in order to create an electrochemical gradient for the creation of ATP
why is oxygen referred to as the “final electron receptor”
oxygen accepts the electrons after they have passed through the electron transport chain; oxygen has high electronegativity which pulls electrons towards it
what would happen to the process of CR if an inhibitor were introduced? how would this affect human health and survival
this would result in uncoupling and can be detremental to ones health. a case being “luft syndrome” where a woman was not producing ATP due to uncoupling and her body temperature spiked due to the thermal heat energy being produced
what happens when electron transport and ATP synthesis are uncoupled.
H+ goes into the matrix and produces thermal heat energy
two examples of uncoupling
1 beneficial 1 harmful
- hibernation
- DNP drug
- drug used to lose weigh that resulted in uncoupling and it was banned
