Part 2 Flashcards
Where does transcription start?
Region of DNA known as the promotar
What is the function of mRNA?
Carries a copy of the DNA code from the nucleus to the ribosome
What is the function of tRNA?
Carries specific amino acids to the ribosome
What is the function of rRNA?
Makes up the ribosome
What are the differences that separate DNA and RNA?
DNA
-double stranded
-contains deoxyribose sugar
-bases are ATGC
RNA
-Singel stranded
-contains ribose sugar
-bases AUCG (uracil replaces thymine)
During splicing, what are the coding and non coding regions?
Exons= coding
Introns= non coding
What is alternative splicing?
Different exons from the same primary mRNA transcript are spliced together to produce different mature mRNA transcripts
What is the difference between peptide bonds and hydrogen bonds?
Hydrogen bonds are weak and peptide bonds are solid
What is cellular differentation?
Cells express certain genes that produces protein characteristics of that cell type allowing them to divide continuously
What are meristems?
Unspecialised cells capable of cell devision
What are stem cells?
Unsepcialised cells that can continue to divide and differentiate into specialised cells of multiple types
What are adult stem cells functions?
Growth and repair
What is the therapeutic use of stem cells?
Bone Marrow transplants and skin grafts
What is the research uses of stem cells?
Drug testing and studying how diseases develop
