Appointment:
Who will generally be appointed an OC suspects?
It is anticipated they will be a supervisor of detective sergeant rank in common with those in charge of other phases.
Purpose:
What is the OC suspects responsible for?
Supervising the members of the suspects team got the purpose of;
- obtaining info about suspects and POI.
- thoroughly profiling the investigation all suspects and persons of interest to enable to OC investigation to establish their involvement in the offence or elimination.
- seeking evidence to cover all elements of the offence
- mitigating and dealing with possible defences that may be raised, where appropriate.
- providing a basis for further investigation

Responsibilities of OC suspects:
Briefing the suspects team
What should the initial briefing encompass?
- circumstances of offence including an analysis of the scene and witness evidence available
- the full details of all persons of interest and any suspect, where the identity of suspects are known
- details of any descriptions of the suspect provided by witnesses
- whether any particular modus opera Di/ crime signatures have been identified
Identifying suspects:

Arrest/ termination and interview
Before termination what should OC suspect consult with OC investigation to ensure?
- an investigator is appointed to be responsible for each suspect
- decision to prosecute
- clarity on the position to be taken by police regarding bail
- authority to engage crown solicitor
- the fam of deceased are updated via the FLO
- prompt prep of the prosecution file
Preparing to interview:
Prior to interview of suspect, what should
OC suspect so?
- liaise with OC regarding selection of interviewer
- consult with OC regarding most appropriate mode of interview
- establish, in consultation with with the OC, the status of the person as a witness, person of interest or suspect
- consider whether the person requires special consideration
Interviewing:
During any interviewing of a suspect what must OC suspects ensure?
- interview is conducted in accordance with the ‘investigative report btwrviewing suspect guide’
- other is monitored by a supervised or experienced detective.
- ensure an explanation is sought from suspect in relation to any exhibits found
Arrest of suspect:
After arrest what should OC suspect do?
- ensure suspects isolated from each other
- ensure rights are given
- if youth, ensure youth rights
- consider search warrant
