What are the three types of airfield?
Basic Grass, Triangular and Main Instrument
How wide is a standard runway?
45 metres
How long is a standard runway?
1,800 metres
How wide are taxiways?
At least 15 metres
What colour are runway markings?
White
What colour are taxiway markings?
Yellow
What do the large numbers at either end of a runway indicate?
The magnetic heading of that runway to the nearest 10 degrees (eg heading 123 becomes 12).
What is arrester gear?
A hook under a plane that catches on a cable to stop the aircraft very quickly.
What is an arrester barrier?
A large net that catches aircraft at the end of a runway.
What is an ORP?
Operational Readiness Platform, where aircraft are kept for rapid “scrambles”.
What is HAS?
Hardened Aircraft Shelter
How are obstructions marked on an airfield?
Red and White squares or (eg) yellow roofs, and red flashing lights at night.
What is a holding position?
Where aircraft wait until safe to proceed, 70 metres from the runway.
What is the airfield ID?
2 letters (eg SY for Shawbury), flashed in morse code at night in red from ID beacon
What lighting is used on a taxiway?
Blue lights at edges, green at centre
