Intradermal sites
Inner surface of forearm and upper back under scapula; administer into dermis
Subcutaneous sites
Administer into adipose; outer upper arm, abdomen, anterior aspects of thigh, upper back, ventral/dorsogluteal
Intramuscular sites
Medication administration via skin and subcutaneous tissues in vast use lateralis, deltoid, ventrogluteal
What are IDs used for?
Sensitivity tests — TB and allergy
What do we use SQ injections for?
Insulin, heparin, morphine
What do we use IMs for?
Vaccinations
What are the needle sizes for ID?
1/4” - 1/2”
What are needle sizes for SQ?
3/8” - 1”;
3/8” & 5/8” most common
What are needle sizes for IM?
5/8” to 1” into vastus lateralis
5/8” to 1 1/2” into deltoid
1” to 1 1/2” into ventrogluteal
What are gauge sizes for ID?
25 G or 27 G
What are gauge sizes for SQ?
25 - 30 G
What are gauge sizes for IM?
(AQ) 20 - 25 G
(OIL) 18 - 25 G
What are the appropriate insertion angles for ID?
5-15 degrees
What are the appropriate insertion angles for SQ?
45 or 90 degrees
What are appropriate insertion angles for IM?
90 degrees
