Symbolism has been proficiently utilised within the text to position the reader to understand how the removal of colour has impacted the citizens right to choice and self expression.

In the beginning of the novel Fiona’s hair is symbolic of love as Jonas is experiencing “stirrings” or deep romantic feelings for her which the elders view as something impure as it could lead to rebellion and loyalty to something other than the community itself.

In addition the sled memory also holds an interesting symbolic meaning as sleds typically symbolise adventure and freedom but when you pair this element with the fact that the sled is also the colour red it’s symbolic meaning changes to being that courage is necessary when facing danger on an adventure.

Courage has been mentioned twice in the novel in regard to Jonas. Firstly, when the chief elder proclaims that he will “need immense courage” when he begins his training as the receiver where he will face danger in the form of pain. Secondly, when the giver states that Jonas now “has the courage” which he will need on his journey to the next community where he will face danger in the form of starvation and exposure to the elements.

In both of these examples Jonas is having to be valiant and venture outside of the communities strict rules however when he does he learns about the many joys and wonders that individualism and choice bring.

Therefore symbolism is utilised by the illustrator and author to position readers to understand that having colour means having choice, having freedom, having self expression and creativity which is a right that none within the community are aware of.
