skill
a learned action with the intentions of bringing about pre-determined results
ability
inherited, stable traits that determine an individuals potential to learn or acquire new skills
continuum
a line with a classification extreme at each end
basic skill
a skill that requires little decisions, little contraction and little thought required
complex skill
a skill that requires complex decision making in order to be successful
open skill
a skill which is performed in a changing or unstable environment
closed skill
a skill which is not affected by the environment or performers within it. it tends to be done the same way the each time.
self-paced skill
the skill is started when the performer decides to start it. the speed/rate/pace of the skill is controlled by the performer
externally-paced skill
the skill is started because of an external factor. the speed/rate/pace of the skill is controlled by external factors, e.g. an opponent
gross skill
a skill that uses large muscle groups to perform big, strong and powerful movements
fine skill
a skill involving small, precise movements, showing high levels of accuracy and coordination. it involves the use of small groups of muscles.
performance goal
a goal which focuses on an aspect of an athlete’s personal performance which they are in control of
outcome goal
focuses on the bigger picture of what they are trying to achieve, usually linked to an end result
SMART targets
targets that ensure that goals are specific and appropriate to an athlete and their sport
information processing
the name given to the process that a performer goes through when they make and act on decisions
