How do we manage breathlessness?
Care of the dying adult: NICE guideline
Consider managing breathlessness with:
an opioid1 or
a benzodiazepine1 or
a combination of an opioid1 and benzodiazepine1.
Do not routinely start oxygen to manage breathlessness. Only offer oxygen therapy to people known or clinically suspected to have hypoxaemia.
For people in the last days of life with OBSTRTUCTIVE bowel disorders who have nausea or vomiting, consider:
hyoscine butylbromide2 as the first-line pharmacological treatment
How do we manage anxiety or agitation in end of life care?
Treat any reversible causes of agitation, anxiety or delirium, for example, fear and psychological causes, or certain metabolic disorders.
Consider a trial of a benzodiazepine Diazepam to manage anxiety or agitation. or midazolam
How is nausea and vomiting managed?
