P9 Speed, Velocity, Motion Flashcards
To find the average speed of an object:
Distance / time taken
To find distance travelled:
Speed x time
To find the time taken for journey:
Distance / speed
Collision speed if to objects move in opposite directions:
Object 1’s speed + object 2’s speed
To calculate acceleration:
Change in velocity / time taken
To calculate acceleration due to gravity:
Gravitational field strength x time taken = final speed.
Newton’s second law of motion
The acceleration of a body is directly proportional to the applied force and inversely proportional to its mass
Newton’s third law of motion
To every action there is a an equal and opposite reaction.
E.g. Action: Air is blown out of the jet engines at high speed.
Reaction: the aircraft moves forward.
Formula to find acceleration without using time taken
V^2 = U^2 + 2aS
Final velocity^2 = initial velocity^2 + 2 x acceleration x distance ( displacement)
