P7: Magnetism Flashcards
What is a magnetic material?
A material strongly attracted to a magnet.
What are the magnetic materials?
Steel, Nickel, Iron, Cobalt. (SNIC)
What is a magnetic field?
The space around a magnet that can exert magnetic forces.
How are magnetic fields represented?
With magnetic field lines.
What do magnetic field lines show?
They show the direction where a small plotting compass would point if placed there.
What is the direction of magnetic field lines?
They go from the North facing pole to the South facing pole.
List 4 facts about magnetic field lines.
They never cross, go north to south, are continuous and the closer the lines, the stronger the force of the field.
Where is the strongest part of a magnetic field?
At the poles.
What do like & unlike poles do?
Like poles repel, while unlike poles attract.
Why does the earth have a magnetic field?
Because it has an iron core.
What happens at the neutral point?
The two magnetic fields cancel.
What is the neutral point?
Where there is no magnetic effect.
