P7: Induced Magnetism Flashcards
What materials can pass through magnetic fields?
Non-magnetic materials such as:
- Zinc
- Aluminium
- Copper
What is induced magnetism?
When a magnetic material becomes magnetic after being placed in a magnetic field, and has it’s own North and South poles.
What happens to soft iron and hard steel when the magnet is removed?
Soft iron loses magnetism, hard steel retains it.
Why is steel used for permanent magnets?
It retains its magnetism even if the magnet is removed.
Why is iron used for electromagnets?
It is easily magnetised & demagnetised, so it can be switched off and on in a circuit.
What is a permanent magnet?
A permanent magnet produces its own magnetic field, and retains its magnetic ability even if there is no inducing field or current.
