P6-Matter Flashcards
What is density?
How much mass is in a certain volume.
How do you calculate density?
Density= mass / volume
What is the word equation for density?
P (rho) = m (mass) / v (volume)
What is a solid?
Particles that are closely packed together and vibrate about fixed positions.
What is a liquid?
A substance that can flow or be poured. In a random arrangement.
What is a gas?
In a random arrangement, particles that are spread apart.
What is it when a gas turns to liquid?
Deposition.
Solid to gas?
Sublimation.
What is latent heat?
The energy transferred to a substance when it changes state. The substance does not change temperature during a change in state as the thermal energy is being transferred to make or break intermolecular bonds.
When a solid is heating up what happens?
The kinetic energy increases as the potential energy decreases.
What is the equation for internal energy.
Internal energy = kinetic energy + potential energy.
What is internal energy?
The energy stored by the particles of a substance. This is caused by the individual motion and position of the particles.
Internal energy is caused by the sum of?
The kinetic energy due to motions and potential energy due to individual positions relative to eachother.
What is the equation for specific latent heat?
E = m L
What is the word equation for specific latent heat ?
Energy = mass (kg) x specific latent heat (j/kg)
