P3 - Energy Resources Flashcards
P3 - What are the advantages and disadvantages of using solar panels/cells?
Advantages:
Free
Does not produce any pollution.
Works well in hot countries to get electricity to remote places.
Good for low power uses - garden lights.
Disadvantages:
Expensive.
Doesn’t work at night.
Unreliable.
You have to create large solar panel fields to generate enough electricity.
They take up a lot of space.
P3 - What are the advantages and disadvantages of using hydroelectric systems?
Advantages:
Free once the dam is built.
No waste produced.
More reliable than wind and solar or wave.
Water can be stored and used to
generate power very quickly when people are using electricity.
Disadvantages:
Expensive.
Destruction of habitat - flooding.
Finding the right place to build a dam can be difficult.
Water quality is affected.
Kills animals and plants.
P3 - What are the advantages and disadvantages of using wind turbines?
Advantages:
Free
No fuel needed
Used as tourist attractions
Area underneath can still be used for farming
Disadvantages:
Expensive.
Noisy
Unsightly
Can kill marine mammals if built offshore
Unreliable
P3 - What are the advantages of using biomass?
Advantages:
Cheap.
Reduces demand for fossil fuels.
It uses waste - recycling.
P3 - What are the disadvantages of using biomass?
Disadvantages:
Burning biomass fuels release greenhouse gases.
Difficult to collect enough fuel.
Some waste material do not grow all year round
P3 - What are the advantages of using geothermal?
Advantages:
No pollution.
Doesn’t contribute to greenhouse effect.
Power stations are small.
Free energy once the station is built.
No fuel required.
P3 - What are the disadvantages of using geothermal?
Disadvantages:
Suitable locations are rare.
Hazardous gases come up from underground.
Power stations can sometimes run out of steam.
