Ozymandias - pride: ruler was proud of what he’d achieved and called other rulers to admire what he did
Duchess: duke is very proud of his possessions and status
Ozymandias - power: human civilisations and achievements are insignificant compared to the passing of time. Art has power to preserve elements of human existence but it is also only temporary
Duchess power: the duke enjoys the control he has over the painting “none puts by the curtain I have drawn for you” . He didn’t have this power over the duchess when she was alive
Ozymandias has a loss of power and authority over time
Duchess- the duke didn’t have control over the duchess but gained it over time with art
Ozymandias - inscription shows he believed he was the most powerful ruler in the land and no one could compete with him and thought he as better than others
Duchess: the duke doesn’t like the way the duchess treats him the same as everyone else showing he believes he should be placed higher than others showing arrogance
“She thanked men -good! But thanked somehow- I know not how” - repetition and punctuation created stuttering effect underlining his exasperation with her behaviour
Repetition of “stoop” shows he felt his wife was beneath him
Ozymandias : language of power:
Poem focuses on human power however his power has been lost and is only visible due to the power of art . Ultimately nature has ruined the statue showing nature and time have more power than anything else
Duchess: power and objectification:
Duke felt the need to have power and control over the duchess and saw her as a possession to be collected and admired and can keep this through art
