Oxidative Phosphorylation (Pt. 1) Flashcards
Where does oxidative phosphorylation occur
Mitochondrial matrix
How many atp are generated in oxidative phosphoryloation
28/32 ATP
What is the overall net reaction
2NADH + 2H+ + 5ADP + 5Pi + O2 –> 5ATP + H2O = 2NAD+
What are the key enzymes in Oxidative Phosphorylation
COmplex I, III, and IV
What is ubiquinone (Q)
It is a small hydrohpobic electron carrier to complex III
What is cytochrome C
small protein that carries electrons from III –> IV
What are the three steps in complex I
- NADH transfers 2e- to FMN
- 2E- transferred from carrier to carrier
- 2e- and 2H+ bind to Q, forming QH2
What happens in complex II
transfers a pair of electrons to FAD –> FADH2, oxidizes succinate, reduces fumarate
What happens in complex III
Has 2 Q binding sites and servar prostetic groups taht function as electron carriers
What happens in complex IV
Oxidation of cytochrome C from inter membrane space to reduce oxygen to create water, 2H+ are transferred from matrix to inter membrane space
