oxidative phosphorylation Flashcards
Where does ATP generation occur?
inner mitochondrial matrix
How many H+ are pumped out per NADH?
10
What part of ATP synthase is in the membrane?
C ring
What part of the cell are the aB hexameters in?
matrix
What drives C ring rotation?
protonation and deionization of the glutamate in the C-ring, same with the Asp residue. Protons leave through half channels
How many ATP does one full rotation go the y-subunit produce?
3 ATP
What binds in order to get the thing to rotate?
ADP+Pi +Mg2+
What does oligomycin do?
inhibits ATP synthase by binding to the C ring and preventing protons from flowing into matrix by binding glutamate residue
What happens when ATP synthase is blocked?
proton gradient becomes too steep and thermodynamically unfavorable
What is respiratory control?
When ADP builds up in the cell bc a lot of ATP was used, this makes system work faster
What do chemical uncouplers do?
like DNP, protons will still get pumped out but will readily flow back in, removing PMF
What does DNP actually do?
converts fat to heat, causes lot of bad things
regulated uncoupling
Uncoupling protein one is a fatty acid activated channel that short circuits the pdf and makes body heat
How much ATP is made?
1 ATP requires 2.7H+, 8 H+ make 3 ATP
