Case in chief:

A

Opening statements: Each party gives an opening statement.

Presentation of evidence: The party with the burden of proof begins presenting their case in chief. This involves calling witnesses and introducing exhibits.

Direct examination: The plaintiff questions the witness under oath.

Cross-examination: The defendant asks the witness questions.

Redirect examination: The plaintiff asks follow-up questions to the defendant’s cross examination.

Resting the case: When the plaintiff is finished presenting their case, they rest or end their case.
After the case in chief, the trial continues with the plaintiff’s rebuttal and the defendant’s surrebuttal.
