- A crime committed by a group
- There is repetition, it is structured (there is authority)
What is the relationship between terrorism and organized crime?
Some terrorist groups rely on organized crime to raise money to support their terrorist activities.
One difference between terrorism and organized crime?
Unlike terrorist groups, they do not try to overtake the government
Relationship between tobacco smuggling and organized crime?
The high taxes on tobacco in Canada and low in the U.S created an opportunity for organized crime. Tobacco companies sell products to smugglers in the U.S who brought it back to Canada
What was the result of tobacco smuggling?
There was a huge loss in tax revenue
Root causes of organized crime?
- Demand from “law abiding” citizens for illegal goods
- Due to goods and service being illegal, and a high demand. A higher price can be charged
- Legal competitors are excluded cause goods services are illegal
- Illegal competitors are excluded by force or threat of force
