Organisation Flashcards
What is the human digestive system?
It’s an organ system in which organs work together to digest and absorb food
What are enzymes in digestion?
They speed up the conversion of large insoluble molecules (food) into small soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream
What are non-communicable diseases?
More energy consumed in food and drink than used
What food test can glucose be tested in?
The Benedict’s test (organs to brick red precipitate)
What food test can you test starch?
The Iodine test (when it turns black)
What are carbohydrates in the human digestive system?
It breaks down carbohydrates to simple sugars
What are proteases in human digestion?
It breaks down protein to amino acids
What happens to lipases in the human digestive system?
They break down lipids (fats) to glycerol and fatty acids
What are the arteries?
They carry high pressure oxygenated blood away from the heart
What do veins do?
They carry deoxygenated blood to the heart
What are capillaries?
They connect the arteries and veins and allow diffusion since it’s one cell thick and carry blood under low pressure
What’s the right ventricle?
It pumps blood to the lungs where gas exchange takes place
What is the left ventricle?
It pumps blood around the rest of the body
What is the pacemaker?
It controls the natural resting heart rate and they can be fitted to correct irregularities
What are the coronary arteries?
They carry oxygenated blood to the cardiac muscle
