Organic Structures and General Rules of Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is the IUPAC name for this molecule?
2-propyl-1-pentene
Even though the longest chain appears to be seven carbons long, we have to start counting at the alkene functional group
What is the IUPAC name for this molecule?
4-ethyl-2-methyl-3-hexene
What is the IUPAC name for this molecule?
5-bromo-1-ethylcyclohexene
(trans)-3,5,5, trimethyl-3-heptene
Becuase the bulkiest substituents of the alkene are on the opposing sides, the configuration is trans.
What is a heterolytic cleavage?
Bond breaking in which both electrons of the bonding electron pair are taken by one product.
What is homolytic cleavage?
Bond breaking in which one electron of the bonding electron pair is distributed to both of the molecules involved (typically radical processes)
