organic chemistry Flashcards
organic compounds
molecules containing carbon
hydrocarbons
organic compounds that contain only hydrogen & carbon atoms
7 types of petroleum from small to large
refinery gases, gasoline, naphtha, kerosene/parafin, diesel oil, fuel oil, residue
refinery gases
bottled gas (cooking)
gasoline/petrol
fuel for cars
naphtha
making chemicals
kerosene/parafin
aircraft fuel
diesel oil
fuel for lorries, buses (larger vehicles)
fuel oil
fuel for ships, power stations
residue
bitumen for roads and roofs
properties of small hydrocarbon molecues
low boiling poinr, very volatile, flows easily, ignites easily
properties of large hydrocarbon molecues
high boiling point, not very volatile, does not flow easily, does not ignite easily
which is better fuel? small or large hydrocarbon
small because they are volitle, flow easily, and are easily ignited
unique properties of carbon
each carbon can have up to 4 bonds, catenation, c-c bonds are stronger than elements in the same group thus greater stability in compounds containing c-c
catenation
carbon atoms bond to each other & form long chain like structures
