Great Basin/desert
what were some difficulties they would have crossing the desert?
Dehydration, no shade, heat stroke, no fire wood, no grass for cattle
How’d they overcome these difficulties ?
for crossing the Great Basin
- they had A LOT of water, probably 2 barrels
- they wore long clothing covering there arms and legs plus hats and visors
- used cattle chips (poop) to make firewood
- also had barrels full of grass
name the 3 F’s of how they would get over mountains and bumpy areas on the mountains
Ferry, Float, Ford
ferry- pay to cross on raft,unload wagon,empty wagons ferry across first then people and animals swam across
Float- would use chains/ropes and pullies to lift empty wagons and set them down on the other side of the mtn.
Ford- walk across if shallow enough
what problems did the great plains cause?
no wood/shade
too hot
rocky mountains caused what difficulties?
running low on supplies, difficulty of getting across mtn, too cold, not enough oxygen, canibolism, death/disease, lost, storms
what problems did south pass cause?
it was cold and their clothes/shoes/body got wet, lost stuff in river, trouble breathing, fell down cliff
