Effectiveness of Opposition before 1917

A

People’s Will. Wanted to end the Romanov Dynasty and create a republic. Achieved success in the killing of Alexander II in 1881, but this just led to Alexander III having an even harsher approach to autocracy

Peasant unrest (712 uprisings between 1826-54) paid off w the Emancipation 1961 and the Zemtzva, but both of these were limited. Emancipation led to huge repayments and debt without really improving living standards - still indebted to Mir, Only 43/70 provinces had zemstva by 1900

Workers protests achieved little before 1914, 200 killed at Lena goldfields strike of 1912

Finland gained full autonomy in 1905, but Stolypin reneged this
