why is there an under estimation of occupational dz in the us?
clinical findings are similar to those without occupational dz
long latency period from exposure to sx/dx
not enough occupational personel to help dx
under reporting by bystander exposure (family members exposed or in the neighborhood)
pathophysiology of occupational lung dz
direction irritation leads to excessive mucus secretion, cough, hyperreactivity, dyspnea, pulmonary edema and pneumoitis
dust particles retained in the lungs; fibrotic or granulamatous response. can be latent 10-20 years
hypersensativity pneuomonitis: antigen triggers abnormal immune system response; occupational asthma
