Obstructive Shock Flashcards

Q

Discuss the causes of obstructive shock

A

Obstructive shock is a condition characterized by inadequate blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues, leading to organ failure and death. It is caused by an obstruction to the flow of blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Common causes of obstructive shock include blockage of the large vessels due to thrombosis, embolism, or external compression; obstruction of the small vessels due to vasospasm or inflammation; and obstruction of the lymphatic channels due to lymphadenopathy. Other causes of obstructive shock include cardiac tamponade, tension pneumothorax, pulmonary embolism, and airway obstruction. Treatment of obstructive shock involves treating the underlying cause and supportive care such as fluid resuscitation, vasopressors, and other interventions to restore adequate blood flow and oxygen delivery to the tissues.
