Q

Opposing evidence: Milgram

A

Used female ppts and found 65% obedience: the same as the og study using male ppts. However this is just one study, and the female ppts showed more distress, showing some difference

Q

Opposing evidence: Kilham & Mann

A

Did find some gender differences, when replicating Milgram’s research in Australia. When administering the shocks, obedience was 40% for males and 16% for females. When the ppt gave the order to someone else to administer the shock, the obedience was 68% for males and 40% for females. This suggests that females are less obedient than males.

Q

Opposing evidence: Sheridan & King

A
  1. Ppts ordered to give real electric shock to a live puppy. Found that a staggering 100% of female ppts were fully obedient, compared to 54% of male ppts. Female ppts showed more distress, sobbing their way through experiment. Also, males in study were more defiant when asked to shock a puppy than the male ppts in Milgram’s study who were asked to shock human being.

Q

Strengths of gender affecting obedience

A

Not all studies looked at gender when considering the emotion reaction of ppts, but when it is it is clear to see females show and feel more anxiety and tension
Experiments used have good controls in place over variables, to see the effect of the IV on the DV, therefore providing reliable data.

Q

Weaknesses of gender affecting obedience

A

The one study carried out by Milgram with female ppts is not enough to test gender as a factor in obedience
The studies are experiments, in artificial settings, therefore lacking validity, making them less applicable to real-world settings
