Nutrition Flashcards
Nutrients
chemical substances obtained from food and required for proper body function
Six nutrients in food
Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, nutrients, water
Nutrients that provide energy
carbs proteins and lipids
Classify nutrients
By chemical composition, essentiality, amount needed, energy yield
Organic
carbs, lipids, proteins, vitamins
Essential
a nutrient that must be supplied in the diet because it cannot be made by the body
Conditionally essential
A nutrient that is normally non-essential but becomes essential under certain conditions
Macronutrients
grams, carbs, protein, lipids, water
Micronutrients
micrograms, vitamins, minerals
Energy-yielding
Carbs-4, lipids-9, proteins-4
what nutrients do
support growth and health of the body for example alcohol although it has calories it is not a nutrient
Heat
(Measured in terms of kcals) is release when food is digested and chemical bonds are broken
Kilocalorie
the unit used to express the amount of energy in food
Nutrition Assessment
A-Anthropometric B-Biochemical C-Clinical D-Dietary
Body’s energy priorities
