Q

Nutrient pollution

A

when excess nutrients (nitrogen/phosoprus) are added to an aquatic system –> often leads to eutrophication
-threat facing aquatic systems

Q

primary producers

A
  • can use solar energy to create organize tissue out of basic nutrients in the environments
  • take up nutrients to produce biomolecules for growth and production
    -ex. plants
-an organism that synthesizes its own food
  • organisms that can synthesize organic molecules from inorganic material
    • rely on solar energy to power chemical reactions during photosynthesis
      -bottom of trophic level

Q

eutrophication

A

-lakes with large populations of phytoplankton → eutrophic
-eutrophication → extra nutrients = added to a lake
-if nutrient levels become high → algal blooms → lake communities can suffocate
-the process by which an entire body of water, or parts of it, becomes progressively enriched with minerals and nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus. It has also been defined as “nutrient-induced increase in phytoplankton productivity
-algae blooms –> eat up oxygen, kill fish

Q

Limiting Nutrients

A

a nutrient who’s addition to a system results in increased growth in one or more of the primary producer populations

Q

Nutrients

A
  • elements required by living organisms
    • Elements = building blocks from which organisms are built; make up the energy rick molecules that provide fuel for living organisms to function

Q

herbivores

A

-consumers
-middle of trophic level
- - eat primary producers
- predators → eat herbivores or other predators

biomagnification

A

mercury makes its way up the food chain → becomes more concentrated at higher trophic levels
