nucleic acids Flashcards
what are the four bases in DNA called?
adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine
what are the complimentary base pairings?
guanine and cytosine
adenine and thymine
what reactions occur between nucleotide molecules?
condensation
a DNA nucleotide
phosphate group, organic base and deoxyribose
compare and contrast DNA and RNA
DNA has deoxyribose whereas RNA has ribose, DNA is double stranded whereas RNA is single stranded, RNA as uracil instead of thymine. both polymers of nucleotides and both have phosphodiester bonds
how is the structure of DNA adapted for the storage of genetic information?
helix is compact so lots can be stored in the nucleus.
the sugar phosphate backbone protects the organic bases inside.
the sequence of the bases is the genetic code
how is the structure of DNA adapted for accurate replication?
2 strands so they can act as a template.
hydrogen bonds between bases that are easily Brocken so the strands can separate
complimentary base pairings allows accurate replication
the process of DNA replication
DNA helicase breaks down hydrogen bonds between strands/ base pairs. Both strands act as a template. free nucleotides attach. Complimaenary base pairings. DNA polymerase causes condensation reactions which join adjacent nucleotides. PHosphodeiester bonds form. This is semi conservative replication
why is the process known as semi conservative replication?
contains one parent strand which acts as a template
