Norms (Unit 3) Flashcards
What is a norm?
Commonly agreed upon modes of behavior.
- Feel an obligation to follow some norms, some stronger than others.

Traits of norms?
They are declared by authority, must be reasonable and involve our freedom
Describe norms declared by authority?
Norms are often given to us by those in a position of authority
- Supported by the authority of those who suggested them
- Religious laws (ex 10 commandments) are supported by God’s authority
- Canadian law is supported by the authority of an elected national government.
Describe norms being reasonable
Norms should not be arbitrary, must be based on a rational good that they are aimed towards
- Arbitrary norms may only be followed out of fear of authority
- Rational norms followed because they appeal to our rationality and understanding of the common good (our sense of obligation to these norms will be stronger)
Norms Involving our freedom?
Because we are free, norms give us the opportunity to use our freedom to act in a good and responsible way.
How does do norms help us with our freedom? (four)
