Non-Competitive inhibitors Flashcards
1
Q
What are Non-Competitive Inhibitors?
A
- They do not have a similar shape to the substrate
- these molecules attach to the enzyme but not the active site
- they bind to a different site on an enzyme molecule - ALLOSTERIC
- distorts the shape of the enzyme as a whole, so changes the shape of the active site
- substrate molecule can no longer fit into the active site
- reaction rate slows down
2
Q
FEATURES of non-competitive inhibitors?
A
- IRREVERSIBLE
- highly toxic, useful
3
Q
What are ORGANPHSOPHATES?
A
- used in INSECTICIDES - to kill insects
- they permamently join to the enzyme needed for nerve iimpulse transmission, preventing normal never impulses, reducing the paralysis and death.

Q
What are PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS (PPIs)?
A
- Used to treat indigestion in humans
- They permanently block the action of an enzyme needed to make stomach acid, so less acid is made,
- helps prevent stomach ulcers.
