Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
Why it’s important
Nitrogen cycle
Used to form amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, the building blocks of DNA and RNA
Five major transformations
Nitrogen cycle
Nitrogen fixation, Nitrification, assimilation, mineralization, and denitrification
Nitrogen cycle
Nitrogen Fixation Biotic process
1
Nitrogrn cycle
Nitrogen Fixation
1
(Biotic process) N2 ammonia to (NH3) ammonium done by cyano bacteria in the root of legumes
Abiotic process
Nitrogen cycle
1
Nitrogen fixation
Nitrite N2 to Nitrate (NO3-)
2
Assimilation Nitrogen cycle
Assimilation
Producers take up ammonium or nitrate
Consumer eliminate nitrogen by eating producers
3
Ammonfication Nitrogen cycle
Ammonification
Decomposers break down N compounds into ammonium (NH4+)
The ammonuim can be converted into nitrite (NO2-) or nitrate (NO3)
4 Dentrification
Nitrogen Cycle
Nitrogen cycle
Dentrification
Dentrifying bacteria convert nitrate (NO3) into nitrous oxide and evenually nitrogen gas
Leaching
Negatively charged particles repel soil so nitrate is transported through the soil with the water. These settle at the bottom of lakes, oceans, swamps
Effects
Nitrogen Cycle
Nitrogen cycle
Increases atmospheric concentrations of fertilizer where it is applied
Alter distribution or abundance of species
Sink
