Neuroplasticity Flashcards
Define neuroplasticity
ability of nervous system to reorganize/rewire its structure and function in response to internal or external stimuli
Define long term potentiation
LTP is a long lasting strengthening of a synaptic connection that occurs with repeated stimulation
What two receptors does glutamate bind to? What is their effect?
AMPA and NMDA
Depolarization
What are the 3 effects of LTP on a synaptic level?
Phosphorylation of AMPA receptors
Creation of new AMPA receptors
Sprouting of dendrites
Define long term depression
Reverse process that can weaken the efficacy of the synapse
What is the neuroplasticity derived proposed therapy for stroke?
Constraint induced therapy
What are the three areas involved in pleasure control?
Prefrontal cortex inhibits nucleus accumbance
Nucleus accumbance stimulates ventral tegnmental area to release dopamine
What is the effect of continued use of drug/addiction?
loss of inhibition of prefrontal cortex
What are the two types and subtypes of transcranial magnetic stimulation?
Single TMS, multiple TMS
Multiple: high frequency–> stimulates
Low frequency–> supresses
What are the possible side effects of TMS?
Some case reports of seizures
