What is Guillan Barre syndrome?
Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy
< 6 weeks, post-infection
What would you see in an LP of someone with Guillan-Barre?
increased protein, no cells
How would you treat Guillan-Barre?
IVIG, plasma exchange
ventilation, heparin
What are the symptoms of Guillan - Barre?
symmetrical muscle weakness (especially distal limbs), sensory loss, pain, decreased/absent reflexes, post-infective
What are 3 toxins that mimic GBS?
botulism, thalium, lead, hexane
What are some pathogens that can cause GBS?
campylobacter, influenza, cytomegaolovirus, Hep A,B,C,E, HIV
How can you confirm demyleination?
nerve conduction study
MRI
What tests would you do for GBS?
NCS
LP - increased protein, no cells
