Q

How do you Diagnose someone with a Brain Injury ?

A

BRAIN IMAGING

  1. ) CT / CAT SCAN
    - It produces a black and white image
    - uses x-ray and a computer to create the image.
  2. ) MRI SCANS
    - Uses strong Magnetic Fields and radio waves to produced a detailed image.

Q

What are the different stages of ABI coma & reduced awareness states ?

A

a. ) VEGETATIVE STATE
- person have a sleep wake cycles but no conscious awareness of themselves &
surroundings.

b. ) MINIMALLY CONSCIOUS STATE
- Shows distinct but limited signs awareness and response to stimulation.

c. ) LOCKED - IN SYNDROME (rare)
- Person is aware of themselves & surroundings but unable to move / speak.

Q

What are the different types of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) ?

A

1.) CLOSED HEAD INJURY
- No break in the skin and it occur during acceleration / deceleration of the head, where
the head rocks back and fro causing a DIFFUSE AXONAL BRAIN INJURY.

  1. ) OPEN WOUNDS
    - break into the skin causing bleeding to the head
  2. ) CRUSHING INJURIES
    - This is when two objects on either side of the head crushes the brain & skull.

Q

What are the different types of HEMORRHAGE ?

A
  1. ) EPIDURAL HEMATOMA
    - Bleeding between the dura and the skull
  2. ) SUBDURAL HEMATOMA
    - Bleeding between the Dura and Arachnoid matter
  3. ) SUBRACHNOID HEMORRHAGE
    - Bleeding within the Arachnoid space ( aneurysm )
  4. ) INTRACEREBRAL HEMORRHAGE
    - stroke

Q

What are the immediate signs and symptoms of TBI

A
  • DIIFICULTY CONCENTRATING (confusion)
  • CHANGES IN CONSCIOUSNESS
  • HEADACHE & DIZZINESS
  • SWELLING AT THE SITE OF INJURY
  • CHANGES IN MOOD / PERSONALITY
  • INABILITY TO REMEMBER

Q

List some medical management for TBI.

A

1.) OXYGEN AND BREATHING ASSISTANCE
- being intubated for mechanical ventilation on arrival at hospital
2.) CONTROLLING HR AND RHYTHM
- medication given via infusion, they’re also sedated to reduce consciousness level.
3.) FLUIDS / BLOOD TRANSFUSION / MEDICATION
- Its used to raised BP
4.) ANTI - SEIZURE MEDICATION
- Seizures occur due to a build up of pressure / fluid around the brain tissue.
( swelling / inflammation increases fluid production )

Q

Non Traumatic Brain Injury :

What is Cerebral Hypoxia ?

A

This means there is a partial supply of O2, but at a level which is inadequate to maintain normal brain function.

A
  • CONFUSION
  • LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS
  • FEELING DIZZY
  • INTENSE HEADACHE
  • VOMITING
17
Q

What are the causes of a SPINAL CORD INJURY (SCI) ?

A
  1. ) TRAUMATIC
    - Destruction from direct Trauma
    - Compression by bone Fragment / Haematoma
    - Ischemia from damage
  2. ) Non- Traumatic
    - Degenerative Disc Disease / Spinal Canal Stenosis
    - Tumour / Inflammation of SC
    - Viral infection
18
Q

Name the different types of Spinal Cord Injuries ?

A
  1. ) COMPLETE
    - complete loss of function below the point of Injury
  2. ) INCOMPLETE (4 types)
    - there is some sparring of neural activity below the level of the lesion
  3. ) TETRAPLEGIA / QUADRAPLEGIA
    - Impairment at Cervical Segment of the cords and affects all 4 limbs
  4. ) PARAPLEGIA
    - Impairment at the THORACIC/LUMBAR/SACRAL part of the cord
19
Q

What are the different types of INCOMPLETE SPINAL CORD INJURIES ?

A

1.) CENTRAL CORD SYNDROME
- Motor ( upper limbs ) and Bladder Dysfunction
Affected : Corticospinal & Spinothalamic Tract.

  1. ) BROWN - SEQUARD
    - Motor Deficit & Numbness to touch
  2. ) ANTERIOR CORD
    - Caused by Disc Herniation
    - Motor paralysis below lesion / Loss of pain & Temperature sense
  3. ) POSTERIOR CORD SYNDROME
    - Compression to posterior sensory section of the SC, causing SENSORY DISTURBANCE & MOTOR LOSS.
