neuroanatomy Flashcards
afferent
sensory
efferent
motor
sympathetic system
mobilize energy
parasympathetic
conserve energy
anterior side of the brain
front of the brain
posterior side of the brain
back of the brain
coronal (frontal) section
- Slicing the brain so you can see both hemispheres
- The dorsal side of the brain to ventral side of the brain
- Cut from top (superior - dorsal) to bottom (inferior - ventral) of the brain
horizontal section
- Cutting horizontally through the brain
- Like from right ear to left ear
mid-sagittal (medial) section
- Cutting brain exactly in the half (in the middle)
- Cutting from the front of your brain to the back
- From anterior (front) to posterior (back)
ANTERIOR side of the brain
the front of your brain
POSTERIOR side of the brain
the back of your brain
dorsal –> superior
the top of your brain
ventral –> inferior
the bottom of your brain
divisions of the forebrain
telencephalon & diencephalon
divisions of the midbrain
mesencephalon
divisions of the hindbrain
metencephalon & myelencephalon
myelencephalon contains…
- medulla
- reticular formation (reticular activating system)
mesencephalon contains…
- pons
- cerebellum
- also houses reticular formation
mesencephalon
- tectum (roof)
- tegmentum (floor)
diencephalon
- thalamus
- hypothalamus
telencephalon
- cerebal cortex
- amygdala
- basal ganglia
the longitudinal fissure
- divides our cerebrum in half (our brain in half)
- separates right hemisphere from left hemisphere
- convolutions (sulcus) folding inwards
corpus callosum
- largest commissure that connects our left and right hemispheres
- axons are sending messages between the hemispheres
- damage specifically here means the entire neuron is not killed only the axon is damaged which causes dysfunction
contralateral organization
- your left hemisphere controls you right half of your body
- your right hemisphere controls your left half of your body
