Neuro Targeted Flashcards
what is a comminuted fracture
you have 2 or more fragments of bone
what is a greenstick fracture
causes the bone the bend and break
alendronate teaching
- do not take with milk or products that contain calcium as it reduces the absorption
- take with 8 oz of water
- remain upright for 30 mins after taking as it can cause GERD
- its a biphosphate
- they prevent bone resorption
post craniotomy reportable drainage level
over 50mL/8 hours/
6.25 mL/hr
Rheumatoid arthritis
- usually bilateral and symmetrical
2. joints that are used daily are susceptible to deformity due to inflammation.
why should the CO2 levels of head injury patients be kept on the low side of normal?
because CO2 causes vasodilation which leads to increase in ICP
What is Menieres disease
it affects the ear, usually only one ear and causes vertigio and hearing loss which eventually progresses to permanent loss. these patients should
- avoid high salt b/c it causes fluid retention leading to exacerbation
- move head slowly
retinal detachment manifestations
- some visual loss in affected eye, but not complete blindness
- flashes of bright light or floating dark spots
- no pain b/c no pain fibers on the retina
treatment for primary angle closure glaucoma
- administer osmotic diuretics via IV bolus
- DO NOT administer mydriatic drops which cause dilation and subsquent increase in IOP
- DO NOT give epi b/c it also causes pupillary dilation
what is a sign that needs to be reported right away following a head injury and why
clear drainage from the nose b/c it indicates CSF leaking placing the client at risk for meningeal infection b/c micro organisms have access to the brain
Tensilon Test
Determines if the patient is experiencing a myasthenic crisis or a cholinergic crisis
- administer drophonium (tensilon)
- it prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine
- If they get stronger after injection then they have myasthenia gravis
