NETWORKS - LANS Flashcards
What is CSMA/CD?
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection, a protocol used in Ethernet networks to manage data transmission and avoid collisions.
What is a NIC?
Network Interface Card, a hardware component that allows computers to connect to a network and transmit data
What is a MAC Address?
A 48-bit globally unique identifier assigned to network interface cards, written in hexadecimal (e.g., 00:60:8C:00:54:99)
What are the three types of LAN transmissions?
Unicast (single destination), Multicast (multiple but not all destinations), and Broadcast (all destinations)
What is the difference between a hub and a switch?
A hub broadcasts data to all connected devices, while a switch selectively forwards data only to the intended recipient
What is Switched Ethernet?
A hardware implementation of bridging that automatically learns source addresses and forwards selectively to destinations
What are VLANs?
Virtual LANs are software-defined logical groupings that limit broadcast traffic to defined workgroups.
What is PoE?
Power over Ethernet, a technology that delivers power through Ethernet cabling to devices like VoIP phones and wireless access points
What are the two sub-layers of the data link layer defined by IEEE?
Logical Link Control (LLC) and Media Access Control (MAC)
What are three common aspects of IEEE 802 LAN standards?
48-bit MAC address length, support for broadcast and multicast addressing, and 32-bit error checking
How has Ethernet evolved in terms of speed?
From 10BASE5 (10 Mbps) to higher speeds like 1 Gigabit/s, 10 Gigabit/s, and even 100 Gigabit/s Ethernet
What is the main difference between legacy and contemporary Ethernet?
Contemporary Ethernet (1 Gbps and above) uses full-duplex communication and has eliminated CSMA/CD
What is meant by IEEE (802.3)?
The working group and standard defining the physical layer and data link layer’s MAC of wired Ethernet
What is the definition of LAN (Local Access Area)?
A computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area
What is the definition of MAC Address?
A unique identifier assigned to network interface controllers for communications on a network segment
