Bus, ring & tree.
What network is used for specialist users?
Mesh.
What networks do school and homes often use?
Star & wireless networks.
What are device on a network called? List examples.
Node.
PC, laptop, printer etc
What does NIC stand for? And what is it needed for?
Network interface card. Needed in each computers system to connect to a network.
What does a network hub connect to? What does it do?
Connects nodes together. Sends data to every part of the network.
What is the function of a switch?
Has the same function as a hub but will “learn” (or programme) to send data anywhere needed.
What is the function of a router?
Connects different networks together e.g. home network to Internet.
What is the function of wireless networking (WIFI)?
Connects mobile devices e.g. smart phones etc.
What is the function of wireless access point? (WAP)
Often built into routers, allows devices to connect to a network & to access Internet.
How are networks arranged?
Arranged in topologies, bus, ring, tree, star and mesh.
How are computers connected together?
In a network using communication devices.
What day PCs, laser printers and network storage devices connect to?
Connect to hub - each have network interface card inside.
What does this switch do?
Connects devices via cables.
What does the router do?
Connects network to Internet.
